Please Allow Me To Introduce Myself..

Hello everyone, my name is Marissa Agostinelli your Big Sandy Superstore in-home designer. If you are anything like me you probably have a stack of design magazines of marked pages with folded corners along with various Pinterest boards that feature your dream design elements, new tips & tricks to try at home and favorite space layouts with color coordination’s. If you were to sit down and analyze all of those saved images and pieces of information you will find that quite often there’s a trend or a pattern. It may not always seem apparent at first but that is where the real fun begins.

The way that I like to structure my process is to look at everything I do through the lens of these following words, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Interior Design is about how to evoke people’s emotions in the built environment, whether it’s through the manipulations of shapes, textures and colors of a room or simply incorporating an overall theme that flows through ought the home. Once you begin a home project it is more beneficial to get a designer involved right away, in order to start building your relationship so that you are confident in the recommendations and packages they put together for you.

Some concerns that often arise when hiring a designer is that it’s going to be too expensive and that the designer is going to try to push their own personal style that doesn’t reflect the client’s personality. It is quite the opposite; a designer can help save time and money and is always leading the way for the homeowner to contribute their own ideas for the space. It is very important to keep a clear line of communication between the client and the designer and if there are any questions or concerns the client should never hesitate to bring them up and work with the designer in finding the best solutions for their project.
The way to be well prepared for the first consultation would be to make a list of needs, wants, desires and what isn’t working in the current living environment. Also having a good idea as far as what budget and time frame to work around can help the designer work closely within those guidelines and make it apparent if there’s the possibility of something coming up that might extend those areas.

At the end of the day it’s all about cultivating relationships, solving problems and creating a living environment that best suits the needs and vision of the client. A Circle Fits a Square!

Dining Season is fast approaching but you’ve still got time to pick the perfect dining furniture at Big Sandy Superstore. We have a wide variety of style options and table types but how will you know which and what size table will work best for your home? Well, that depends on your dining room.

First, you’ll want to consider the shape of your room because that will ultimately determine the shape of your table. A round table is going to work best in a square space, especially in a smaller dining room. Rectangular and oval tables work great for rectangular dining spaces.

You’ll also want to consider the size of your room and your average number of guests when selecting the size of your table. Your guests should have enough room to push their chair back from the table and rise comfortably which can range from 36-48 inches. You should also allow at least 24 inches of table surface per seat and if you plan to have guests seated at the head and foot of the table add an extra 12 inches at each end. Dining tables are generally 30 inches high and chairs typically measure 18 inches from the floor to the seat. This leaves 12 inches of lap and leg space for your guests to be seated comfortably.

Fall, Food and New Dining Tables!

Of all the seasons I think fall is my favorite.. the days are still warm, the nights are cool, the leaves begin to change and there’s pumpkin flavored everything at the grocery store!! But best of all it’s the start of the holiday season which means enjoying extra time spent with friends and family! Which leads me to my most favorite activity of the holidays.. EATING :) Because, let’s be honest, the two most anticipated meals of the entire year are Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner!!!

If you’re hosting one these meals then you already know the table where you gather is almost as important as the feast itself! You need space to serve your holiday dishes and your guest need a seat to enjoy their meal. Hopefully your dining space is all ready to go for the holidays! But if not or you’re just ready for a quick update to your dining furniture we’ve got a few, brand new options that will have your guest swooning over your great taste AND culinary skills!!

This one is the most unique as the group has an option pew style bench the base has a gorgeous scroll and the server is on trend with a sliding barn door design.

This trestle table group is another option your guest will love! Two chair options: wood with upholstered seat and back or a Parsons slipper chair. The weathered grey give this group a current spin on a more traditional style.

My Kitchen Upgrade Part 1: Fridge Facts

My husband and I bought our house 4 years ago and that included a mismatched set of kitchen appliances by 4 different brands…4 years later they’re still there. They’re fine. They’re basic…and they work. But after 4 years it’s time that we invest in a matching kitchen package that’s better than just basic.

With that said, I’ve been doing some research, starting with the refrigerator, checking out different models and brands and learning a few things along the way.

First thing I have learned is, and this is an absolute must, you have to measure the space where the refrigerator will be placed: height, width and depth – top to bottom, left to right, front to back. Refrigerators have different dimensions and not every refrigerator will fit your current space. You also have to consider the door swing – how far it will open and fill the space of your kitchen. With your final measurement you’ll need to include the proper ventilation space, to maintain the performance of your appliance. Oh yeah…and something I would have never thought of…measure the doorways along the path to your kitchen to make sure that delivery will go smoothly!!

The next thing I discovered… there are several different types of refrigerators, which goes back to the absolute need for a good measurement. Here’s the short list:

Top mount/Bottom mount freezer– This is the traditional style in which the freezer is either located at the top or the bottom. This style features reversible doors that swing left or right.

Side-by-side refrigerators are a two-door configuration, with freezer and refrigerator compartments of similar size. The doors run vertically, top to bottom. This style is a great option for kitchens with limited space.

French door styles feature two doors, opening from the center and third door or drawer to access the bottom mount freezer.

A 4-door French door refrigerator features an additional door/drawer between the refrigerator and freezer compartments that can be used as either an additional refrigerator or freezer compartment.

Door-in-door models are traditionally French door style but the door will open to reveal a door inside the door. This feature is an energy saver because the main refrigerator compartment remains closed resulting in better temperature regulation.

Counter depth refrigerators are flush with cabinet fronts providing a built-in look. You’ll lose a small amount of interior storage space with a counter depth model so keep that in mind!

Our current refrigerator is a side-by-side which I like but I think I would prefer a French door, door-in-door refrigerator best. Hopefully, if my measurements work, I would LOVE to have the extra drawer to keep the go-to snacks we reach for the most. And as far as color or finish, I love the look of stainless and now there are two versions-traditional stainless and all new black stainless steel!!

Taking my measurements and style preference into consideration I’ve found an amazing option that fits both and brings even more to the table with technology! It’s the Family Hub Refrigerator made by Samsung. There is literally a giant tablet built into the door with internet and apps that will keep us organized, connected and entertained! 3 built-in cameras snap photos each time the doors close, viewable from the Smart Home app on your phone! That means I can check in on the contents of the fridge while I’m at the grocery store!! “Do we need milk? Hmm, let me look on my phone!!” lol The Family Hub is a 4-door refrigerator with a FlexZone bottom, right door, so if i need extra space in either the fridge or freezer I can switch with a touch of a button!! Two finish options are available-traditional stainless and Black stainless with finger print proof coating and I have the choice of standard or counter depth!

This refrigerator is the clear winner now it’s time to look at our best options for a new range.. Which I’ll talk about next week :)

Non Scale Victories!

That scale gets us every time! Why are we so ruled by it? Allowing it to define how “good” or “bad” we are. Wrapping our self worth in a solitary number. We need to stop, especially women. You need to cherish the positive outcomes of your hard work towards self improvement and it greatly has nothing to do with that scale.

I love exercise, I know I’m weird but don’t hate me just yet. I’ve always had trouble with the scale though and nutrition cause I’m a recovered sugar addict.  Even now having dropped several pants sizes my weight is essentially the same. Yep I was about 150 lbs when I started my macro nutrition plan months ago and I’m pretty much the same now but I’m a size 4 instead of 8-10. I’m happy, faster, way more muscle and I can deadlift 255 lbs so who gives a poo about the scale…my victories are elsewhere and I love it!! I’m healthy!!

If you are working hard to better yourself and your health then why are you mentally ripping yourself apart over a number? You will not have continued success that way. You have to truly treat yourself like someone you love. So focus on your successes! Celebrate the victories that have nothing to do with the scale. Are your pants looser, Can you lift more weight, Are you faster, More energy, Feeling pride in your hard work, sleeping better, happier, eating clean? If yes to those questions then those are the things that matter! You are setting an example for your family and framing what they see as healthy. Your children need to see the self love and joy in that process to be inspired, not self loathing. You are made new by those efforts and changes so act like it! I’m just saying shine bright and show others it’s truly worth it because it is and so are you!!

 

What Is Maggie Eating??

So I get asked this a lot, mainly while I’m actually trying to eat my food…what is that? What made you think of that? So I’ll share with you all what I’m eating this week. Hopefully it will inspire you to think about food differently and recreate your fave meals into cleaned up versions. I do not believe in boring or mundane…whether  it’s food, workouts, movies, vacations…I love new things and with food I love flavor. This week my meal prep was on a Monday night so don’t be giving me your excuses that you don’t have time…it whether you choose to make time and this stuff is too yummy not to try it trust me. While my children ran circles around me and I threw string cheese their way I cooked up some cool little takes on meals I’ve loved.

There’s this new rage for clean eating called “sweet potato toast” so I had to try it cause I love sweet potato. You cut it length wise so it’s thin slices like bread so about 4 per potato and then put it in the toaster for 2-3 rounds. Top with you fave things you would put on bread. I put sliced avocado and bacon on top…yummo! Yes you could do this with a whole potato but cooking method so easy and portion control on those carbs and totally satisfying side dish. Paired with with grilled zucchini and chicken I dipped in Frank’s red hot buffalo sauce (this stuff is totally my dipper jam).  My next try will be PB and a few banana slices I think…watch out Elvis😉

Furniture Cleaning Codes Decoded!

We’re often asked “How do I clean my sofa?” or recliner or loveseat or.. well, you get the point! Just like your clothes there are cleaning instructions for the care of your upholstery fabric. And you might be surprised to know, for some fabrics, water is a big NO NO!!! WATER? The liquid that keeps us hydrated, our lawns green and our swimming pools full? Yep.. it’s true.. For some upholstery a drop of water will leave and unsightly ring like stain that looks like something far worse was spilled or dribbled!!

So, how do you know if water is bad  and what should you use instead? Check the cleaning code of your upholstery fabric! Manufactures typically tag their furniture with model and serial information and you’ll find the cleaning code there along with the fabric contents.. Check the seat decking below the cushion or underneath the furniture. Can’t find the find the tag..? Give us a call and we’ll get the code!

Okay. You’ve got the code now, right? Good!!

There are 4 general codes and each are defined below..

S is for solvent based cleaners.. no water!! NONONO water..

W is for water and/or water based cleaners..

WS either water or solvent

And then there is X … no liquids period!! if you have kids and pets.. just go ahead and cover that piece in plastic and never sit on it or breath near it.. lol

Cleaning Code Description

X Do not clean with either water- or solvent-based cleaner. Use vacuuming or light brushing only.

Self Doubt

Self doubt is the mother of all progress and joy suckers. The whole “you got to believe in yourself” motto is more than just a phrase. I’m not talking arrogance but confidence. As women we often bash them both in others maybe because we don’t value confidence in ourselves. We need to lovingly accept ourselves, all the imperfections as they are and own them. That’s how you shove self doubt away. And the awesome thing is the more you do that the easier it is to say “I can do that…I may not know how but I’m going to try”. It takes us more easily out of our comfort zones and allows us to test our limits and challenge ourselves…that’s where the transformation and change occurs.  Eliminating self-doubt is not the same as illusions of grandeur. It means loving yourself enough to try new things, open up to the life going on around you and really live. Self confidence is honestly not something you get by achieving your goals but the other way around. You have to believe you can and then act on it. That process then continues and you realize how powerful you are purely because you believe in and love yourself.  In terms of body image alone results happen and are sustained by those who first love their body for what it can do instead of bashing it for what it’s not. I know for me that journey was tough to grasp but once I did I realize I am my only limit and the same goes for you. So if you want to succeed at your goals then I dare you to really believe you can long before you are ever there and to love yourself as you are right now!! It’s the only way to progress and relentlessly move forward with fire in your life. I’m just saying eliminate self doubt by embracing all the good that you are and belief in what you can be. Forget what others think, only what you think truly does matter and will make you or break you!

 

One Kind Word

One kind word…we often want to hear them but don’t give them out as freely. Imagine starting your day out by hearing that kind word. It makes the chaos of life bearable, something we can survive and thrive through just sharing a piece of joy with others. We may not feel it ourselves when we give it away but it can even develop true joy in the giver.  In a world that is so quick to point out how we are different, to criticize the tiniest details, to complain incessantly….be the giver of one kind word! You can’t change the world but you could change one persons world. So give a true “Good Morning”, “You look great”, “you did awesome today”, “way to go”, or “keep smiling” to someone today!! You could be the only one that is kind to that person today…it could save their spirit and their smile. I’m just saying if you want to receive kindness you often first have to give it.
