My husband and I bought our house 4 years ago and that included a mismatched set of kitchen appliances by 4 different brands…4 years later they’re still there. They’re fine. They’re basic…and they work. But after 4 years it’s time that we invest in a matching kitchen package that’s better than just basic.
With that said, I’ve been doing some research, starting with the refrigerator, checking out different models and brands and learning a few things along the way.
First thing I have learned is, and this is an absolute must, you have to measure the space where the refrigerator will be placed: height, width and depth – top to bottom, left to right, front to back. Refrigerators have different dimensions and not every refrigerator will fit your current space. You also have to consider the door swing – how far it will open and fill the space of your kitchen. With your final measurement you’ll need to include the proper ventilation space, to maintain the performance of your appliance. Oh yeah…and something I would have never thought of…measure the doorways along the path to your kitchen to make sure that delivery will go smoothly!!
The next thing I discovered… there are several different types of refrigerators, which goes back to the absolute need for a good measurement. Here’s the short list:
Top mount/Bottom mount freezer– This is the traditional style in which the freezer is either located at the top or the bottom. This style features reversible doors that swing left or right.
Side-by-side refrigerators are a two-door configuration, with freezer and refrigerator compartments of similar size. The doors run vertically, top to bottom. This style is a great option for kitchens with limited space.
French door styles feature two doors, opening from the center and third door or drawer to access the bottom mount freezer.
A 4-door French door refrigerator features an additional door/drawer between the refrigerator and freezer compartments that can be used as either an additional refrigerator or freezer compartment.
Door-in-door models are traditionally French door style but the door will open to reveal a door inside the door. This feature is an energy saver because the main refrigerator compartment remains closed resulting in better temperature regulation.
Counter depth refrigerators are flush with cabinet fronts providing a built-in look. You’ll lose a small amount of interior storage space with a counter depth model so keep that in mind!
Our current refrigerator is a side-by-side which I like but I think I would prefer a French door, door-in-door refrigerator best. Hopefully, if my measurements work, I would LOVE to have the extra drawer to keep the go-to snacks we reach for the most. And as far as color or finish, I love the look of stainless and now there are two versions-traditional stainless and all new black stainless steel!!
Taking my measurements and style preference into consideration I’ve found an amazing option that fits both and brings even more to the table with technology! It’s the Family Hub Refrigerator made by Samsung. There is literally a giant tablet built into the door with internet and apps that will keep us organized, connected and entertained! 3 built-in cameras snap photos each time the doors close, viewable from the Smart Home app on your phone! That means I can check in on the contents of the fridge while I’m at the grocery store!! “Do we need milk? Hmm, let me look on my phone!!” lol The Family Hub is a 4-door refrigerator with a FlexZone bottom, right door, so if i need extra space in either the fridge or freezer I can switch with a touch of a button!! Two finish options are available-traditional stainless and Black stainless with finger print proof coating and I have the choice of standard or counter depth!
This refrigerator is the clear winner now it’s time to look at our best options for a new range.. Which I’ll talk about next week
Let me know what you think about the Family Hub, if you’re an owner of this fridge or if you have any questions about it!! Until then, Have a great week and a lovely holiday weekend!!
